Planning a helicopter flight in Tanzania? Understanding the strict luggage rules is essential for a smooth and stress-free experience. Unlike commercial airlines or road safaris, helicopters have limited space and weight restrictions due to safety and performance requirements.
This comprehensive 2026 guide covers everything you need to know about helicopter luggage allowance, recommended bag sizes, what to pack, and what to leave behind for scenic flights, executive transfers, safari fly-ins, and emergency evacuations.
Jaynevy Tours and all reputable operators in Tanzania follow these standard rules:
These restrictions ensure safe weight distribution and fit within the helicopter’s limited storage compartments.
Best options that comply with all rules:
Choose durable, water-resistant materials. Many guests use 40–60 litre soft duffels that compress well.
Additional luggage can sometimes be arranged via road transfer at extra cost, but it will not travel on the helicopter.
Pack light — only essentials for the day. A small daypack with camera, water, and sunscreen is usually sufficient.
Use one soft duffel per person. Roll clothes to save space and bring a small separate bag for dirty laundry.
Layering is key. Include warm layers even if the base is hot — temperatures drop significantly at higher altitudes.
Business attire can be packed in soft garment bags that fold flat. Keep electronics and documents easily accessible.
If you have more luggage than the 15 kg allowance, we can arrange separate road transfer of excess bags to your destination (extra fee applies). Please inform us at the time of booking so we can coordinate this smoothly.
The standard allowance is 15 kg per person in soft-sided bags only. Hard suitcases are not permitted.
Recommended maximum dimensions are 50cm × 25cm × 30cm. Soft duffel bags or backpacks work best.
