Out after an early breakfast for a full day in the park with a packed lunch. The open Mkata Floodplain, the heart of Mikumi, is often compared to the Serengeti plains: lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, elands and hartebeest, and packs of wild dogs are sometimes seen. Lunch is at about 1:00 at a picnic site, then you drive on until late afternoon, stopping at the Hippo Pools, before returning to camp for dinner.

Visiting a Maasai Boma near Mikumi
Maasai families graze their cattle in the country around Mikumi, and a visit to a boma, a family homestead of mud-and-stick houses inside a thorn fence, is the cultural half of this safari. You are welcomed by the family, hear how they live with their herds, see the inside of a house and join in the songs and the jumping dance. It is a relaxed afternoon after the train, and children especially enjoy it. A respectful note: ask before taking close-up photos of people.

June to October is the dry season and the best time for game viewing, as animals gather near water and the grass is short. Mikumi is open all year: from November to May the plains turn green, with newborn animals and migrant birds, and the train keeps the park easy to reach even in the rains. See our Mikumi National Park guide for more.
