Usambara Mountains Walking Tours

The Usambara Mountains rise steeply from the plains of north-east Tanzania, green and cool, with farming villages, forest and viewpoints such as Irente, where the land drops away to the Maasai Steppe. Lushoto, an old German hill station, is the base for walks of a day or more.

What You Need to Know: Our Usambara Mountains tours start from US$106 per person per day, so a 3-day walking trip from Lushoto starts from US$318. The highlights are the Irente viewpoint, village and farm walks with local guides, and multi-day treks between villages. Lushoto is about 4 hours by road from Moshi. We also run a 10-day route combining Mkomazi, the Usambaras and Saadani.

Usambara Mountains

Why Visit the Usambaras?

The Usambaras are part of the ancient Eastern Arc Mountains, with forests full of plants and birds found nowhere else. The Western Usambaras around Lushoto are farmed in terraces by the Shambaa people, with footpaths linking villages, markets and viewpoints; the Eastern Usambaras, with the Amani Nature Reserve, are wetter and more forested.

It is the opposite of a safari: quiet walking at about 4,600–6,600 ft (1,400–2,000 m), cool air, village life and huge views.

Usambara Walks: Irente Viewpoint, Villages and Lushoto

Most walks start from Lushoto: the Irente viewpoint, village and farm walks and the town's colonial sites each take half a day, and multi-day treks link remote villages.

Walk Length Highlights
Irente viewpoint Half day A cliff-top view over the plains, about 3,300 ft (1,000 m) below
Village and farm walk Half day Terraced farms, local markets, Shambaa homes
Lushoto town and colonial sites Half day German-era buildings, the market
Multi-day village trek 2–5 days Remote villages, forest and ridges

Local guides from Lushoto lead every walk, on footpaths between villages. Most walks are moderate, on hilly paths; guides adapt the length to your pace.

Village Life on a Usambara Walk

Walks pass through Shambaa villages where families grow vegetables, fruit and coffee on terraced slopes. Your local guide introduces you along the way, and you may stop at a school, a market or a home where food is cooked over a wood fire. It is a chance to see rural Tanzania at walking pace.

Multi-Day Village Treks in the Western Usambaras

For walkers with more time, multi-day treks link villages across the Western Usambaras over two to five days. Each day you walk through farmland, forest and ridges with your local guide, staying in simple village guesthouses and eating local food. It is one of the best ways to see rural Tanzania at walking pace, far from roads and tourists.

Treks are planned around your fitness and interests; the daily rate starts from US$106 per person, multiplied by the number of days.

When Is the Best Time to Walk in the Usambaras?

June to October and December to February are the driest months and best for walking. It rains most in March to May; paths get slippery then, but the hills are at their greenest. Nights are cool all year, so bring a warm layer.

How Do You Get to the Usambara Mountains?

Lushoto is about 4 hours by road from Moshi, 5–6 hours from Arusha and 6–7 hours from Dar es Salaam, all through Mombo.

From How Time
Moshi By road via Mombo About 4 hours
Arusha By road via Mombo 5–6 hours
Dar es Salaam By road via Segera and Mombo 6–7 hours
Tanga (East Usambaras, Amani) By road About 2 hours

The last stretch climbs from Mombo to Lushoto on a winding mountain road.

The road from Mombo up to Lushoto is tarmac but steep and winding, and most village paths can only be reached on foot. Your guide plans walks so you start and finish at points a vehicle can reach, and luggage can be moved by car between guesthouses on multi-day treks. Walking is the best way to explore, and the slow pace is part of the charm.

Where to Stay in Lushoto and the Usambaras

Lushoto has simple guesthouses and lodges, some on farms with views over the hills; on multi-day treks you sleep in village guesthouses. Facilities are simple, so bring a warm layer for cool nights.

Lushoto and the History of the Usambaras

Lushoto was a German colonial hill station, and the cool climate still makes it a market town for vegetables and fruit grown on the slopes. Old mission buildings and colonial houses stand among the farms, and the weekly markets bring villages together in town.
