Who Is the Mafia Island Whale Shark Holiday For?

It suits travelers who want the ocean without the crowds: couples, friends and families with children who can snorkel. Mafia has no big resorts and very few visitors, and the days follow the tide and the boats. If a whale shark day trip feels too rushed, these four days let you swim with the sharks, see the marine park properly and still have a day to do nothing at all.

Swimming with Whale Sharks off Mafia: What to Expect

Whale sharks gather off Mafia from October to February, with some sightings into March, and the calmest seas are usually from November to February. The sharks here are mostly young ones of about 13–30 ft (4–10 m), filter-feeding on plankton, and harmless to people. You snorkel from the surface, so you don't need to be a diver, but you should be comfortable in open water.

  • Keep at least 10 ft (3 m) from the shark and 13 ft (4 m) from the tail
  • Never touch or ride a shark, and don't use flash
  • Enter the water quietly, a few swimmers at a time, as your guide directs
  • Sightings are likely in season, but never guaranteed

Outside the season, we replace the whale shark day with diving in Chole Bay, a dhow trip to the sandbanks or a visit to the turtle nesting beaches of Juani Island. More about the island is in our Mafia Island tours guide.

From Zanzibar, flights link the islands via Dar es Salaam. For a honeymoon, our 11-day Zanzibar, Nyerere and Mafia itinerary spends four nights on Chole Bay.
