Nungwi: Lively and Close to Everything

On the north coast, at Nungwi and Kendwa, the water stays deep enough to swim at almost any time of day, which is why these beaches are so popular. On the east coast, at Paje, Jambiani, Matemwe and Kiwengwa, the sea retreats far out at low tide, sometimes for hundreds of meters, leaving shallow pools, seaweed farms and sandbars.
Low tide on the east coast has its own charm: you can walk out to the reef, watch local women tend seaweed farms, and find starfish in the pools. But if swimming whenever you like matters most, choose the north. If you stay on the east coast, check the tide tables and plan swims around high tide.
