Why Visit the Aberdares?
The park protects the high Aberdare range and its forest, rising to about 13,100 ft (4,000 m). It is very different from the savannah parks: misty bamboo and forest, moorland with giant heather, and some of Kenya's highest waterfalls.
The tree lodges are an Aberdare tradition: at Treetops, in 1952, Princess Elizabeth learned she had become Queen. From the viewing decks you watch elephants, buffaloes and sometimes leopards at the waterhole after dark.

Most visitors spend one night at a tree lodge, such as Treetops or The Ark, with luggage left at a base hotel in Nyeri, because the rooms are small and you go up with an overnight bag only.

You usually check in to a base hotel near Nyeri around midday, then continue with an overnight bag to the tree lodge in the afternoon. As night falls, animals come to the floodlit waterhole below the decks, and you can ask to be woken if something special appears.

When Is the Best Time to Visit the Aberdares?
The best time is the drier months, June to September and December to February; roads on the moorland can close in heavy rain.
The Aberdares catch a lot of rain, and the mountain weather can change quickly. In the long rains of April and May, some roads become impassable and the forest is dripping wet, though the tree lodges stay open.
Nights are cold at altitude all year, so bring warm layers even if the plains below are hot. A visit fits well between Nairobi and Ol Pejeta or Samburu on a northern Kenya safari.

Distances between the waterfalls and viewpoints are short on the map but slow on the ground, so allow a full day to explore.
