Why Visit Lake Nakuru?
The park covers about 190 km² around the lake, with acacia woodland, grassland and cliffs. It was fenced as a rhino sanctuary, and today rhino sightings here are among the most reliable in East Africa. Rothschild's giraffes, an endangered subspecies, were moved here too, along with buffaloes, waterbucks, lions and leopards.
Nakuru was once famous for flocks of flamingos turning the shore pink. Since the lake rose sharply after 2013, the water has become less salty and many flamingos have moved to other Rift Valley lakes, so numbers vary from year to year. Pelicans and hundreds of other bird species are still here.
