Diani Beach Guide

Diani is Kenya's best-known beach: a long stretch of white sand and palm trees south of Mombasa, with a coral reef offshore, colobus monkeys in the forest and dolphin trips from Shimoni.

What You Need to Know: Diani Beach is about 1 hour south of Mombasa and a 1-hour flight from Nairobi to Ukunda airstrip. It is the most popular place to end a Kenya safari with beach days, with snorkeling, kitesurfing from December to March and dolphin trips to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park. Plan 3–5 nights.

Why Visit Diani Beach?

Diani's beach is wide and white, protected by a reef that makes the water calm at low tide. Behind it, the Kaya forests are sacred to the Digo people and home to Angolan colobus monkeys; the Colobus Conservation center builds rope bridges so they can cross the road safely.

Further south, boats from Shimoni and Wasini Island run trips to Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park for snorkeling and dolphins, and humpback whales pass between August and October.

Things to Do at Diani Beach

  • Beach days and snorkeling on the reef
  • Kitesurfing, best from December to March
  • Dolphin and snorkeling trips to Kisite-Mpunguti from Shimoni

How to Add Diani Beach to a Kenya Safari

No fixed itinerary includes Diani yet. Most guests add the coast after a safari: we arrange a flight or the Madaraka Express train from Nairobi and a few nights at the beach after any of our Kenya itineraries, such as the 14-day Kenya and Rwanda safari.

Our Kenya trips are planned by us and run on the ground by trusted local partner operators: you get one written quotation and one point of contact, and a private vehicle with a driver-guide for your group only. In Kenya that is a 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, sliding windows, a fridge and binoculars.

Diani After a Safari

The simplest plan is a safari in the Maasai Mara or Amboseli, then a flight from Nairobi to Ukunda, next to Diani. From Tsavo you can drive to the coast in 2–3 hours. See our Kenya safaris.

Beyond the Beach

Diani is more than sand and sea. The Colobus Conservation center works to protect the Angolan colobus monkeys that live in the coastal forest, building rope bridges over the busy road and caring for injured animals; a guided walk there is a highlight for families. The Kaya Kinondo sacred forest, protected by the Digo community, can be visited with a local guide who explains its traditions.

Out at sea, the Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park off Shimoni has some of Kenya's best snorkeling and regular dolphin sightings, and between about July and October humpback whales pass along the coast. Back on land, Shimba Hills is a short drive away for sable antelope and elephants.

Diani pairs well with a safari in Tsavo or Amboseli by road, or with the Mara by air; see our Kenya safaris.

Getting Around Diani

Diani's beach road runs parallel to the sea for several kilometers, lined with hotels, restaurants and shops. Tuk-tuks and taxis are easy to find for short trips; for excursions such as Shimoni or Shimba Hills, a private driver is best. Ukunda airstrip, at the north end, has daily flights to Nairobi and connections to the Mara.

Many hotels are directly on the beach, so you may not need transport at all except for trips. Agree taxi fares before you set off, and use hotel-recommended drivers at night.
