A Short History
Mombasa has been a trading port for more than a thousand years. The Portuguese arrived in the late 1400s and built Fort Jesus in the 1590s; Omani Arabs took the fort in 1698, and the British made Mombasa the start of the Uganda Railway in the 1890s. The Old Town's mix of Swahili, Arab, Indian and European buildings tells that story.

Fort Jesus
Fort Jesus was built by the Portuguese between 1593 and 1596 to guard the harbor of Mombasa, and changed hands many times between the Portuguese, Omani Arabs and the British. Its thick coral walls, designed by an Italian architect, are a fine example of Renaissance military architecture, and the fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Inside, a museum displays finds from shipwrecks and excavations, including Chinese porcelain and Portuguese weapons, and the walls give views over the Old Town and the harbor. A guided visit takes about one to two hours; combine it with a walk through the Old Town's narrow streets, carved doors and spice shops.
Mombasa makes a good day stop between a Tsavo safari and the beaches of Diani or the north coast.

North of the city, Nyali, Bamburi and Shanzu have long sandy beaches with hotels and water sports; south, across the Likoni ferry, Diani is quieter and more scenic. Mombasa Marine Park, offshore from Nyali and Bamburi, protects coral reefs with good snorkeling and glass-bottom boat trips.
