Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu Route Trekking 5 to 6-Days Itinerary with Acclimatization
Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu route is a trekking tour that takes 5 days to ascend and descend Mount Kilimanjaro a duration of 5 days to 6 days with the inclusion of acclimatization, The Marangu route itself is a very shortest route to Uhuru peak and the prosperity of Kilimanjaro summit are very high to the prepared trekker. The following is a Marangu route itinerary for 5 to 6 days with acclimatization:
Arrival Day: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO)
Upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport you will meet a Jaynevy Tours representative and your guide for your Kilimanjaro Marangu route trekking for 5 to 6 days before being transferred to your hotel, your hotel will provide all the important amenities including comfortable stays, comfortable rooms, free internet, and reliable staff.
Day 1: Trekking from Marangu gate to Mandara hut
Altitude: 1,860m/6102f to 2,700 m/8858f
Distance: 9 Km
Trekking time: 3 hours
Habitat: Mountain forest
On your first day begin the trekking tour to Mount Kilimanjaro Marangu route, your guide and crew which include porters and a cook will meet you at your hotel, and after a short briefing you will be transferred to Marangu gate, on arrival at Marangu gate necessary entry procedures with KINAPA will be complete and your trek to Mandara hut will begin
Day 2: Trekking Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Altitude: 2750 m to 3,807 m
Distance: 13 Km
Trekking time: 5-6 hours
Habitat: Moorlands
The crew will wake up early in the morning and take a hearty breakfast before departing Mandara hut and trekking to Horombo hut, you will be trekking through the rolling moorland and after several hours of your trek, you will have a clear view of a towering Mount Kilimanjaro, your destination Horombo hut situated at 3,807 m is where the crew will overnight and have a dinner.
Day 3: Horombo Hut Acclimatization Day (This day is excluded from the 5-day itinerary)
This extra day at Horombo huts is for acclimatization and it is only available for the 6-day itinerary, you will spend a day here acclimatizing to Kilimanjaro altitude, You will hike to the Zebra Rock and back at Horombo hut where you will adjust to Kilimanjaro high altitude.
Day 4: Trekking from Horombo to Kibo hut
Altitude: 3,807 m to 4,700 m
Distance: 10 Km
Trekking time: 4-8 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
On this day, the crew will be trekking to Kibo hut (4,700m/15419f). The trek will be at a very low pace compared to the previous trek since we have to preserve energy for the Kilimanjaro trek to the summit, you will hear your guide say "Polepole" which means slowly, and after several hours you will arrive Kibo Hut
Day 5: Summit Day Trek from Kibo hut to Uhuru Peak and descend to Horombo Hut Camp
Altitude: 4,700 m to 5895 m to 3807 m
Distance: 4 Km trek-14 Km Descend
Trekking time: 10-15 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Wake up at midnight to a light breakfast then prepare for your summit ascent. Because you will climb to the summit in the dark you will need to have your headlamps/flashlights. It will also be very cold until you start descending, so you will need to have all of your warm layers. This is an important time to keep on slowly (pole pole in Swahili). The goal is to climb before dawn so that you can reach Uhuru Peak shortly before or after sunrise. Switchback up steep scree or possibly snow, and reach Gilman’s Point on the crater rim at 5,861 m/18,640 ft between 4 and 6 AM. At this point, you will have a view of the fabled crater and its icecaps facing you. Then after 2 hours of hiking along the Kibo crater rim near the celebrated snow you to Kilimanjaro’s true summit, Uhuru Peak here you will spend some time for taking photos. After your summit photos and taking in the view, descend back to the Kibo Huts, have lunch, rest, collect your equipment, and continue down through re-cross the saddle to the Horombo Huts. Have dinner and overnight at Horombo Camp.
Day 6: Descend from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate - Moshi
Altitude: 3,690 m to 1,830 m to 1,387 m
Distance: 18 Km
Trekking time: 5-7 hours
After a long sleep you will be awakened for breakfast and pack, continue your descent through the moorland to Mandara Huts. Here you will have lunch then proceed your triumphant recessional down through the lush forest to Marangu Park gate. After the gate sign-out, a vehicle will take you back to the hotel where it is time for your certificate presentation and celebration!
