Lake Naivasha Guide

Lake Naivasha is a freshwater lake in the Rift Valley, two hours from Nairobi, where you can take a boat among hippos and fish eagles and walk among giraffes and zebras on Crescent Island.

What You Need to Know: Lake Naivasha is about 2 hours from Nairobi, on the way to the Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru. The highlights are a boat ride among hippos, a walking safari on Crescent Island and cycling in Hell's Gate National Park next door. One night is enough, and it makes a relaxed break between parks.

Lake Naivasha

Why Visit Lake Naivasha?

Naivasha is one of the few freshwater lakes in the Rift Valley, at about 6,200 ft (1,880 m), fringed with papyrus and yellow-barked acacias. Hippos live in the shallows, and the lake has more than 400 bird species, including African fish eagles that dive for fish thrown from the boats.

Because there are no big predators on Crescent Island, you can walk with a guide among giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and waterbucks, which is rare in Kenya. Next door, Hell's Gate National Park lets you cycle or walk through a gorge.

How to Add Lake Naivasha to Your Trip

No fixed itinerary includes Lake Naivasha yet, but it fits easily into a Kenya safari: tell us and we add it to a route such as the 10-day Kenya and Uganda gorilla safari (from US$5,200) or the 14-day Kenya and Uganda safari, which already pass through the Rift Valley, and requote the trip.

Our Kenya trips are planned by us and run on the ground by trusted local partner operators: you get one written quotation and one point of contact, and a private vehicle with a driver-guide for your group only. In Kenya that is a 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof, sliding windows, a fridge and binoculars.

What to Combine It With

Where to Stay and Tips for Your Visit

Lodges and camps line the southern and western shores, from simple tented camps to country houses with lawns down to the water; a lakeside room means hippos grazing outside at night.

  • Take the boat ride in the early morning, when the water is calm and fish eagles are most active
  • Wear closed shoes for the Crescent Island walk: the grass hides thorns
  • Hippos leave the water to graze at night, so never walk on the lawns after dark without staff
  • Combine a morning on the lake with an afternoon in Hell's Gate
