Serengeti vs Masai Mara: Which Is Better for the Great Migration in 2026/2027?

The Serengeti and Maasai Mara are not competing versions of the Great Migration—they are connected parts of the same wider Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Choose the Serengeti if you want the broadest range of migration phases across the year, including the southern short-grass plains, central and western corridors, and northern Serengeti. Choose the Maasai Mara if your trip is specifically timed for the period when large herds may move into Kenya and attempt Mara River crossings. UNESCO describes the migration as a roughly 1,000-kilometre annual circular movement involving more than one million wildebeest plus hundreds of thousands of other ungulates. Exact herd locations and river crossings are never guaranteed because rainfall and fresh grazing drive the movement.
