The times and distances below are approximate. Weather, trail conditions, group pace, altitude response and guide decisions can change the day’s timing.
Day 1: Moshi to Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
After the drive from Moshi to Marangu Gate, the team completes park registration and starts trekking through the lower rainforest. The first overnight stop is Mandara Hut.
- Approximate distance: 8 km
- Approximate trekking time: 3–4 hours
- Elevation: about 1,860 m to 2,700 m
- Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
The trail leaves the rainforest and continues into heath and moorland. On clear sections, views may open toward Mawenzi and Kibo before arriving at Horombo Hut.

- Approximate trekking time: 5–6 hours
- Elevation: about 2,700 m to 3,700–3,720 m

- Typical time: around 4 hours
- Zebra Rocks elevation: about 4,020 m
- Sleep elevation: Horombo Hut, about 3,700–3,720 m

- Approximate trekking time: 5–7 hours
- Elevation: about 3,700–3,720 m to 4,700 m
- Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak Attempt and Descent to Horombo Hut
The summit attempt normally starts around midnight. The climb first heads toward the crater rim and then, if conditions and the climber’s health allow, continues toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m. The team then descends past Kibo Hut and continues to Horombo Hut.
- Approximate ascent: about 6 km from Kibo toward Uhuru Peak
- Approximate descent: about 15 km to Horombo Hut
- High point: Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m, if reached
- Important: summit completion is never guaranteed
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate and Transfer to Moshi
After breakfast, the route descends through moorland and rainforest, passing the Mandara area before reaching Marangu Gate. The driver then transfers the group back toward Moshi according to the booked arrangements.
- Approximate distance: 20 km
- Approximate trekking time: 4–6 hours
- Finish: Marangu Gate and road transfer

Altitude, Safety and Acclimatization
The main challenge on Kilimanjaro is altitude rather than technical climbing. Day 3 at Horombo adds time for acclimatization, but no itinerary can guarantee that a climber will adapt well enough to continue. Tell the guide promptly about headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, breathing difficulty or other symptoms. The guide may slow the pace, stop the ascent or arrange descent when safety requires it.
Travel insurance should cover high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation appropriate for a Kilimanjaro climb. Medical advice about altitude medication or personal health should come from a qualified healthcare professional who knows your medical history.
Fitness and Preparation for a 6-Day Marangu Climb
You do not need technical mountaineering skills for the standard Marangu trail, but you should arrive prepared for consecutive trekking days, a long summit night and significant altitude gain. Build endurance with regular walking or hiking, stairs or hills, cardiovascular training and practice carrying a daypack.
- Break in your hiking boots before traveling.
- Train on consecutive days rather than relying on one long weekly workout.
- Practice walking slowly and steadily for several hours.
- Discuss any existing health concerns with your doctor before the trip.

- Headlamp with spare batteries for summit night
- Daypack and reusable water bottles/hydration system

Best Time to Climb the Marangu Route
Kilimanjaro can be climbed in different months, but January to March and June to October are commonly selected for comparatively drier conditions. April–May generally brings heavier rainfall, while November can bring shorter rains. Weather on the mountain remains changeable in every season.
Budget vs Group Joining vs Luxury Marangu
This page is for the budget Marangu option. If your priority is sharing costs with other climbers, compare the 6-Day Marangu group-joining package. If you want added premium services, compare the 6-Day Luxury Marangu climb. The route may be similar, but the service level, private arrangements and final price can differ.
