6-Day Kilimanjaro Group Joining Marangu Itinerary
Walking times and distances are approximate. Group pace, weather, trail conditions, park procedures and guide safety decisions can change the daily schedule.
Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
After transfer from Moshi to Marangu Gate, the group completes park formalities and meets the mountain crew. The trek begins through montane rainforest toward Mandara Hut. This lower section can be wet and muddy, so rain protection should be accessible.
- Elevation: about 1,860 m to 2,700 m
- Approximate distance: 8–9 km
- Approximate walking time: 3–4 hours
- Habitat: Montane rainforest
- Overnight: Mandara Hut
Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
The trail leaves the rainforest and continues into heath and moorland. Views toward Mawenzi and Kibo can open up as the group climbs toward Horombo Hut.
- Elevation: about 2,700 m to 3,720 m
- Approximate distance: about 13 km
- Approximate walking time: 5–6 hours
- Habitat: Heath and moorland
- Overnight: Horombo Hut
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
The group remains based at Horombo for an extra acclimatization day. Depending on the guide's plan, weather and group condition, the day can include a walk toward the Zebra Rocks area before returning to Horombo. The purpose is to spend more time at altitude before continuing higher.
Use the day to hydrate, rest, eat well and report any headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue or breathing difficulty to your guide. An acclimatization day helps the itinerary but does not eliminate altitude risk or guarantee a summit.
- Base elevation: about 3,720 m
- Possible acclimatization objective: Zebra Rocks area
- Overnight: Horombo Hut
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
After breakfast, the group continues across the high saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo. Vegetation becomes sparse as the route enters alpine desert. At Kibo Hut, the priority is food, hydration, warm clothing, equipment preparation and rest before the summit attempt.
- Elevation: about 3,720 m to 4,703 m
- Approximate distance: about 13.7 km
- Approximate walking time: 5–6 hours
- Habitat: Alpine desert
- Overnight: Kibo Hut
Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, then Descend to Horombo Hut
The summit attempt normally starts around midnight. The group climbs steep scree toward Gilman's Point on the crater rim. If your health, weather and your guide's safety assessment allow, the route continues toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m. Reaching the summit is the objective, but it is not guaranteed.
After the summit attempt, the group descends to Kibo and continues down to Horombo Hut for the final night on the mountain. This is the longest and most demanding day of the itinerary.
- Kibo Hut: about 4,703 m
- Uhuru Peak: 5,895 m / 19,341 ft
- Descent overnight: Horombo Hut, about 3,720 m
- Approximate total walking time: around 10–15 hours
- Overnight: Horombo Hut
Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate, then Return to Moshi
After breakfast, the group descends through the moorland and forest, passing Mandara on the way to Marangu Gate. Park exit formalities are completed at the gate, and certificates are issued according to the point reached rather than assuming every climber reached Uhuru Peak.
A vehicle then transfers the group from Marangu Gate to the agreed Moshi drop-off point.
- Approximate distance: 18–20 km
- Approximate walking time: 5–7 hours
- Habitat: Moorland and rainforest
- Transfer: Marangu Gate to agreed Moshi drop-off
