6-Day Budget Kilimanjaro Machame Route Itinerary
The trekking times, distances and elevations below are approximate. Weather, trail conditions, group pace, altitude response and guide safety decisions can change the day’s timing.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After the road transfer from Moshi to Machame Gate, the team completes park registration and starts trekking through the lower rainforest toward Machame Camp. The drive from Moshi to Machame Gate is normally around an hour, depending on traffic and the pickup point.
- Approximate distance: 10–11 km
- Approximate trekking time: 5–7 hours
- Start elevation: around 1,800 m at Machame Gate
- Accommodation: Machame Camp
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
The route leaves the forest and climbs through heath and moorland toward the Shira Plateau. The day is shorter in distance than Day 1 but still involves steady altitude gain.
- Approximate distance: about 5 km
- Approximate trekking time: 4–6 hours
- Destination elevation: around 3,800 m
- Accommodation: Shira Camp
Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Down to Barranco Camp
This day is important for acclimatization because the route climbs higher toward Lava Tower, around 4,600 m, before descending to sleep lower at Barranco Camp. The higher daytime exposure followed by a lower sleeping altitude is one of the defining features of the Machame itinerary.
- Approximate distance: about 10–11 km
- Approximate trekking time: 6–8 hours
- High point: Lava Tower area, around 4,600 m
- Accommodation: Barranco Camp
Day 4: Barranco Camp via Karanga to Barafu Camp
After breakfast, the team tackles the Barranco Wall and continues through the Karanga Valley before climbing toward Barafu Camp. On this six-day schedule, Karanga is passed during the day rather than used as an extra overnight stop.
- Approximate distance: about 8–9 km
- Approximate trekking time: 6–8 hours
- Destination elevation: about 4,660–4,680 m
- Accommodation: Barafu Camp
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak Attempt and Descent to Mweka Camp
The summit attempt normally begins around midnight. Climbers ascend toward Stella Point and, if health, weather and guide decisions allow, continue to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m. After the summit section, the route descends past Barafu and continues to Mweka Camp for the final mountain night.
- Approximate ascent: about 5 km to the summit area
- Approximate descent: about 12–13 km toward Mweka Camp
- High point: Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m, if reached
- Important: summit completion is never guaranteed
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Transfer to Moshi
After breakfast, the team descends through the rainforest to Mweka Gate. The driver meets the group after park exit formalities and returns travelers toward Moshi according to the booked arrangements.
- Approximate distance: about 9–10 km
- Approximate trekking time: 3–4 hours
- Finish: Mweka Gate

Altitude, Safety and Acclimatization
Machame is not a technical climbing route, but altitude is a serious challenge. The itinerary includes useful elevation changes around Lava Tower and Barranco, yet a six-day schedule still moves quickly. Tell the guide promptly about headache, nausea, dizziness, unusual fatigue, breathing difficulty or other symptoms. A guide may slow the pace, stop an ascent or arrange descent when safety requires it.
Travel insurance should cover high-altitude trekking and appropriate emergency evacuation. Medical advice about altitude medication or personal health should come from a qualified healthcare professional who knows your medical history.
Fitness and Preparation for a 6-Day Machame Climb
You do not need technical mountaineering skills for the standard Machame trail, but you should be prepared for steep sections, the Barranco Wall, consecutive trekking days and a long summit night. Build endurance before travel with hiking, stairs or hills, cardiovascular training and practice carrying a daypack.
- Break in hiking boots before traveling.
- Train on consecutive days, not only one long session each week.
- Practice sustained uphill and downhill walking.
- Discuss health concerns with your doctor before the climb.
