Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
We collect you from the agreed Moshi-area accommodation and drive to Machame Gate for registration and park formalities. - Approximate start altitude: 1,640 m
- Approximate camp altitude: 2,835 m
- Terrain: rainforest / montane forest
- Overnight: Machame Camp
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
After breakfast, the trail leaves the forest and climbs through heath and moorland toward the Shira Plateau. The day is shorter in distance but gains significant elevation, so the guide will keep a controlled pace and encourage steady hydration. You camp around 3,750 m.
- Approximate walking time: 4–6 hours
- Approximate camp altitude: 3,750 m
- Terrain: heath and moorland
- Overnight: Shira Camp
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
The route climbs toward Lava Tower at about 4,600 m before descending to Barranco Camp at roughly 3,900 m. This higher daytime exposure followed by a lower sleeping altitude is an important acclimatization feature of the Machame itinerary. The day normally takes around 6–8 hours.
- High point: Lava Tower, about 4,600 m
- Approximate camp altitude: 3,900 m
- Terrain: high moorland and alpine desert
- Overnight: Barranco Camp
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp via Karanga
You begin with the Barranco Wall, a steep section that involves hands-on scrambling in places but is not a technical rock climb under normal route conditions. After crossing into Karanga Valley, the six-day itinerary continues onward to Barafu Camp at about 4,670 m. This is a long day, and you eat and rest early before the summit attempt.
- Approximate walking time: 7–9 hours
- Approximate Barafu altitude: 4,670 m
- Terrain: rocky high-alpine terrain
- Overnight: Barafu Camp
Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then Descend to Mweka Camp
The summit attempt normally begins around midnight or in the very early hours. You climb toward Stella Point and, if conditions and your health allow, continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m. After a short summit stop, you descend via Barafu toward Mweka Camp at roughly 3,100 m. This is usually the longest and most physically demanding day of the climb.
- Summit altitude: 5,895 m
- Typical total walking time: about 10–14 hours
- Conditions: very cold summit hours followed by a long descent
- Overnight: Mweka Camp
Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Return to Moshi

- Approximate walking time: 3–4 hours
- Approximate gate altitude: 1,640 m
- Terrain: rainforest
- Transfer: Mweka Gate to agreed Moshi-area drop-off
