What Is Mnemba Atoll?

Mnemba is a small island about 3 km off Zanzibar's north-east coast, ringed by a shallow coral reef. The island itself is privately leased and closed to day visitors, but the reef and water around it form a marine conservation area that anyone can visit by boat for a fee. The protection shows: the water is often very clear, and the reef has more fish than most sites closer to shore.

What Can You See Snorkeling at Mnemba?

Every trip is different, but these are the sightings guests most often tell us about:

  • Shoals of reef fish: parrotfish, butterflyfish, surgeonfish and clownfish in the anemones
  • Green turtles, especially around the sandy edges of the reef
  • Dolphins, which are often seen in the channel on the way out
  • Starfish, sea cucumbers and coral gardens in water shallow enough to see from the surface

How the Mnemba Trip Works

We collect you from your hotel and drive you to the beach on the north-east coast, where the boat leaves; the ride to the reef takes about 20 to 30 minutes. You then snorkel at one or two spots on the atoll, chosen by the crew for the tide and the current, with time to rest on the boat between them. Most trips go in the morning, when the sea is calmest, and you are back at your hotel by early afternoon. From Stone Town the drive is about an hour and a half each way, so the day is longer.

Children Child prices are shown in your quotation
Included Hotel pickup and drop-off, the boat, snorkel gear, the Mnemba marine conservation fee
Not included Drinks and snacks beyond those on board, tips for the crew, Zanzibar's inbound travel insurance

Every foreign visitor to Zanzibar needs the government's inbound travel insurance, US$44 per adult; if your trip starts on the mainland, the mainland policy covers Zanzibar too. See Zanzibar entry requirements.

Who Is the Mnemba Snorkeling Trip For?

You need to be comfortable in open water, because the reef is reached from a boat rather than from the beach. It is a natural choice if you are staying at Nungwi, Kendwa, Matemwe or Kiwengwa, which are close to the departure beach. Certified divers can dive the atoll instead; see diving in Zanzibar.

Tips for Snorkeling at Mnemba

A few things make the morning more comfortable:

  • Wear a rash vest or T-shirt; it is easy to burn your back while floating face down
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen and never stand on or touch the coral
  • If you get seasick, take a tablet before the boat leaves
  • Bring a towel, a dry bag and a little cash for tips

When Is the Best Time to Snorkel at Mnemba?

December to March usually brings the calmest sea and the best visibility, and June to October is dry with good conditions on most mornings. Wind and swell can make the crossing rough, especially in July and August afternoons, which is why trips leave early. In the long rains of April and May some days are cancelled; if the sea is too rough, we try to rebook you.
