7-Day Mid-Range Kilimanjaro Lemosho Route Itinerary
The itinerary below counts only the seven mountain trekking days. Walking times, distances and elevations are approximate and can vary with trail conditions, camp operations and guide decisions.
Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp
After the pre-climb briefing and transfer toward Londorossi Gate, the team completes park entry formalities and continues to the Lemosho trailhead. The trek begins through montane forest to Mti Mkubwa Camp. Rain and mud are possible in this zone, so keep waterproof layers accessible.
- Typical distance: about 6 km
- Typical time: about 2–4 hours
- Environment: montane forest
Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 2 Camp
The trail climbs out of the forest into heather and moorland, crosses the Shira Plateau and continues toward Shira 2. This is a longer trekking day and one of the first significant altitude gains of the route.
- Typical distance: about 15–16 km
- Typical time: about 7–8 hours
- Environment: heath and moorland
Day 3: Shira 2 to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
Continue east toward Lava Tower, which sits at a higher elevation than the evening camp. After the high point, descend toward Barranco. This “climb high, sleep lower” profile gives useful altitude exposure, but it does not guarantee acclimatization or summit success.
- Typical distance: about 8–10 km
- Typical time: about 5–7 hours
- Key point: Lava Tower, roughly 4,600 m
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Start with the Barranco Wall, a steep trekking and scrambling section that is normally completed without technical climbing equipment on the standard route. Continue across the southern slopes to Karanga Camp, with views toward Kibo when weather allows.
- Typical distance: about 5 km
- Typical time: about 4–5 hours
- Environment: alpine desert
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Climb gradually through the alpine desert to Barafu, the base for the summit attempt. The afternoon is used for food, hydration, equipment checks and rest before the night ascent.
- Typical distance: about 4 km
- Typical time: about 3–5 hours
- Overnight: Barafu Camp
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak to Mweka Camp
The summit attempt normally begins around midnight. Trek toward Stella Point and then continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m if health, weather, trail conditions and the guide's safety assessment allow. After the summit attempt, descend past Barafu and continue to Mweka Camp. This is the longest and most demanding day of the itinerary.
- Typical summit ascent: about 5–7 hours
- Typical descent: about 5–7 hours
- Highest point: Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m
Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Descend through the forest to Mweka Gate for park exit formalities. Your onward transfer to Moshi, Arusha, the airport, a safari or Zanzibar should follow the arrangements confirmed in your written quotation.
- Typical distance: about 10 km
- Typical time: about 3–5 hours
- Finish: Mweka Gate
