7-Day Mid-Range Kilimanjaro Machame Route Itinerary
The seven days below are mountain trekking days. Arrival in Tanzania, a pre-climb briefing and hotel nights are outside Day 1 unless your written quotation specifically includes them in the seven-day count.
Day 1 – Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After breakfast and a final equipment check in Moshi, drive to Machame Gate for registration and porter organization. The trek begins in the montane rainforest and climbs steadily to Machame Camp. Rain can make the forest trail wet or muddy, so waterproof layers and trekking poles can be useful.
- Approx. elevation: 1,800 m → 3,000 m
- Distance: about 11 km
- Walking time: about 5–7 hours
- Terrain: rainforest
Day 2 – Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Leave the forest and climb into heather and moorland. The trail becomes rockier as you gain the Shira Plateau, with broad views across the western side of Kilimanjaro when conditions are clear.
- Approx. elevation: 3,000 m → 3,840 m
- Distance: about 5 km
- Walking time: about 4–6 hours
- Terrain: moorland
Day 3 – Shira Camp to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower
This is a key acclimatization day. You climb toward Lava Tower at roughly 4,600 m before descending to Barranco Camp at a lower sleeping altitude. The higher daytime exposure followed by descent is one of the important altitude-adaptation features of this itinerary.
- Lava Tower: about 4,600 m
- Barranco Camp: about 3,950 m
- Distance: about 10 km
- Walking time: about 6–8 hours
Day 4 – Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Start with the Barranco Wall, a steep but normally non-technical scramble where guides manage pace and spacing. Continue across undulating alpine terrain to Karanga Camp. Keeping Karanga as a separate overnight is one of the defining features of the seven-day Machame itinerary.
- Approx. elevation: 3,950 m → 4,035 m
- Distance: about 5 km
- Walking time: about 4–5 hours
- Terrain: Barranco Wall and alpine desert
Day 5 – Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
Climb gradually to Barafu Camp, the high camp used for the summit attempt. The afternoon is mainly for rest, hydration, an early meal and preparing warm layers, headlamp, gloves, water and other summit-night equipment.
- Approx. elevation: 4,035 m → 4,670 m
- Distance: about 4 km
- Walking time: about 3–4 hours
- Terrain: high alpine desert
Day 6 – Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, Then Descend to Mweka Camp
The summit attempt normally starts around midnight. Climb slowly toward Stella Point and continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m if weather, health and guide safety decisions allow. After the summit attempt, descend to Barafu for a short rest and then continue down to Mweka Camp. This is the longest and most demanding day.
- Highest point: Uhuru Peak, 5,895 m
- Approx. distance: 5 km ascent plus 12–13 km descent
- Typical total trekking time: about 10–14 hours
- Summit is never guaranteed
Day 7 – Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
Descend through the forest to Mweka Gate, complete park exit formalities and meet the transfer vehicle. A summit certificate is issued when applicable. Continue to Moshi or the accommodation stated in your itinerary.
- Approx. distance: 10 km
- Walking time: about 3–4 hours
- Terrain: rainforest descent
