June to August and December to March are the driest months for hiking.
The driest months, roughly June to August and December to March, are best for hiking and cave visits. Mount Elgon catches a lot of rain, so expect showers at any time and bring waterproof clothing. Nights are cold higher up, and frost is common on the moorland.

Mount Elgon offers some of Kenya's quietest mountain hiking. From the Chorlim gate, trails climb through forest and bamboo to moorland with giant groundsels and lobelias, and on to the rim of the vast caldera. Koitobos, the highest point on the Kenyan side at 13,737 ft (4,187 m), can be reached in two or three days, and the hot springs in the caldera make a memorable stop.
Because few people visit, you will often have the trails to yourself. Hiking is done with a Kenya Wildlife Service ranger, and you need good boots, warm clothes and rain gear: the mountain is wet and cold higher up.
Elgon makes a good warm-up or alternative for hikers who want a quieter mountain than Mount Kenya or Kilimanjaro.
