What You Need to Know: For a first Tanzania safari, plan at least 5 days for Tarangire, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, 7 days to add a third Serengeti night and Lake Manyara, and 9 to 12 days to follow the Great Migration in a second Serengeti area. With 3 days, skip the Serengeti and do Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the crater, which are close to Arusha. Our private safaris on these routes cost from US$1,320 for 3 days to US$6,820 for 12 days per person for two at mid-range level.
How Many Days Do You Need for a Tanzania Safari?
The Serengeti is the deciding factor. It is a full day's drive from Arusha, so a trip that includes it needs at least four days, and five or more to enjoy it. Here is what each length gets you:
| Days | Best route | Serengeti nights | From (2, mid-range) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 | Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro | 0 | US$1,320 |
| 4 | Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro | 1–2 | US$2,195 |
| 5 | Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Manyara | 2 | US$2,630 |
| 7 | Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro | 3 | US$3,680 |
| 9 | Adds a second Serengeti area for the migration | 5 | US$5,495 |
| 10 | The full northern circuit | 5 | US$5,085 |
| 12 | Six Serengeti nights, three with the herds | 6 | US$6,820 |
3-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary
Three days works best without the Serengeti: Tarangire on day 1, Lake Manyara on day 2 and the Ngorongoro Crater on day 3, with short drives from Arusha. You see elephants, lions, buffaloes and often a black rhino. The 3-day lodge safari follows this route, and our 3-day camping safari does the same with a night on the crater rim; if the Serengeti is a must, the 3-day Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari squeezes it in with long drives.
5-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary
Five days is the shortest trip that does the classic circuit properly:
- Arusha to Tarangire
- Across the highlands to the central Serengeti
- A full day in the Serengeti
- Serengeti to the Ngorongoro highlands
- The Ngorongoro Crater, then Lake Manyara or Arusha
Follow it with our 5-day lodge safari or the 5-day camping safari; from January to March, the 5-day calving safari swaps the central Serengeti for the herds at Ndutu.
7-Day Tanzania Safari Itinerary
Seven days adds the time that turns a good safari into a great one: three Serengeti nights, so you can follow a lion pride or wait at a leopard's tree. The usual route is Tarangire, Lake Manyara, three nights in the Serengeti, the highlands and the crater, as on our 7-day safari. Between July and October, the 7-day Mara River crossing safari spends the time in the north instead.
9-, 10- and 12-Day Tanzania Safari Itineraries
With nine days or more, the Serengeti splits into two areas: the central plains for the resident cats, and the area where the migration is that month. The 9-day safari spends two nights with the herds, the 10-day safari covers the whole circuit, and the 12-day safari adds an arrival night, three nights with the herds and a full crater day.
Choosing an Itinerary by Season
The parks change through the year, so the best route depends on your month:
| Months | Where to focus | Suggested trip |
|---|---|---|
| January to March | Ndutu and the southern plains for calving | 6-day Ndutu calving safari |
| April and May | Long rains; fewer visitors, lower prices; crater and central Serengeti | 5-day safari |
| June | Herds in the central and western Serengeti | 7-day safari |
| July to October | Northern Serengeti for river crossings; dry season everywhere | 7-day Mara River crossing safari |
| November and December | Short rains; herds moving south | 9-day safari |
More detail is in the best time for a Tanzania safari and the Great Migration by month.
Common Safari Planning Mistakes
Most disappointing safaris come from the same few choices:
- Too many parks in too few days, which means hours on the road instead of watching animals
- One night in the Serengeti, which barely leaves time for a game drive after the long journey in
- Ignoring the migration calendar: the herds are not in the same place all year
- No buffer before an international flight after a long drive from the Serengeti
Adding Zanzibar or Kilimanjaro
A safari pairs easily with a few days on a Zanzibar beach, by a short flight from Arusha or the Serengeti, or with a Kilimanjaro climb before it: see our 11-day Kilimanjaro climb and safari. For something different, add the 2-day Lake Natron trip or a Lake Eyasi visit with the Hadzabe.
Common Questions About Tanzania Safari Itineraries
Short answers to the questions our guests ask us most often:
How many days do you need for a safari in Tanzania?
At least 5 days for the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, 7 to see them properly, and 9 to 12 to follow the Great Migration as well.
Can you do the Serengeti in 3 days?
Yes, but it means long drives. With three days, Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater give you more time watching animals.
What is the best 7-day Tanzania safari itinerary?
Tarangire, Lake Manyara, three nights in the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater; from July to October, three nights at the Mara River instead.
Is 10 days too long for a safari?
Not if it includes two Serengeti areas and some slower days; most guests say the later days are the best.
Which parks should a first safari include?
The Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, with Tarangire for its elephants if you have the days.
Bottom Line: Which Tanzania Safari Itinerary Is Right for You?
Choose by days first: 3 days for the parks near Arusha, 5 to 7 for the classic circuit with the Serengeti, and 9 or more to follow the migration. Then let your travel month decide where in the Serengeti you go. Compare every route on our Tanzania safaris page, or check park fees for 2026 and 2027.
