What You Need to Know: Our 5-day budget calving season group safari costs from US$1,840 per person when six travelers share the vehicle, or US$2,390 each for a couple traveling on their own, including airport transfers, park fees, budget tented camps and campsites, meals and a driver-guide. It covers Tarangire, two nights at Ndutu for the calving herds, the southern Serengeti plains and the Ngorongoro Crater, and runs from January to March in 2027 and 2028. There is no fixed calendar: we start from your dates and match you with other travelers, with at most six in the vehicle and a window seat for everyone.
Who Is This Budget Group Safari For?
It is for couples and solo travelers who want the calving season on a limited budget, and who are happy to share the vehicle and the cost with other travelers. You stay in simple tented camps and campsites, close to the animals, and two of the four nights are at Ndutu, where the herds gather to give birth from January to March.

How Does a Shared Group Safari Work?
We don't sell seats on a fixed calendar. You tell us your dates, and we match you with other travelers who have asked for the same safari on the same or nearby dates. Everyone shares one Land Cruiser and one guide, which is why the price per person falls as the group grows.
- Send us your dates and the number of travelers
- We look for travelers on the same or nearby dates; your dates come first
- We confirm the group and the price before you pay anything
- Everyone pays a 30% deposit once the group is set; the balance is paid on arrival
- If no group forms, you can travel privately or move your dates, and we tell you early
There are never more than six travelers in the vehicle, so everyone has a window seat. More about how we match travelers is on our group joining safaris page.
Is Late January a Good Time for the Calving Season?
Yes. In most years the herds are on the short-grass plains around Ndutu from December to March; calving begins in January and peaks in February, when hundreds of thousands of calves are born within a few weeks, and lions, cheetahs and hyenas follow them. Late January usually puts you among the herds at the start of the peak. The timing follows the rain, so we check reports from our guides and the camps before you travel. See where the herds are in each month in our Great Migration by month guide.

Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire, night at Mto wa Mbu
Your guide collects the group from your hotels in Arusha after breakfast and drives about 2.5 hours to Tarangire National Park, known for its elephant herds and giant baobabs. After a game drive with a lunch box, you drive on to Mto wa Mbu, a busy village at the foot of the Rift Valley wall near Lake Manyara.
Stay: Fanaka Campsite or Lake Manyara Lodge and Campsite, or similar.

Day 2: Through the Ngorongoro highlands to Ndutu
Up the Rift Valley escarpment and through the green Ngorongoro highlands, past the crater rim, then down onto the open southern plains. Ndutu sits on the border of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and in the calving season the herds can be all around the camp. Your game drive starts as soon as you reach the plains.
Stay: Serengeti Classic View Ndutu, a tented camp, or similar.

Day 3: Ndutu and the southern Serengeti plains
A full day with the herds. You go out early, when births are most often seen and the predators are hunting, and follow the wildebeest across the Ndutu plains and into the southern Serengeti, looking for newborn calves, lions, cheetahs and hyenas. A picnic lunch in the vehicle keeps you out with the herds all day.
Stay: the same camp at Ndutu.

Day 4: Ndutu morning, then to the Ngorongoro crater rim
A last morning game drive among the herds, then back up into the highlands to camp on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, at about 7,500 ft (2,300 m), with views down into the crater. Nights on the rim are cold, so bring a warm layer.
Stay: Simba Campsite on the crater rim or Ngorongoro Wild Camp, or similar.

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater, back to Arusha
An early descent of 1,970 ft (600 m) to the crater floor for a game drive among buffaloes, zebras, lions, hyenas and hippos, with the best chance in Tanzania of seeing a black rhino. How Much Is the 5-Day Budget Calving Group Safari?
At budget level the safari costs US$2,390 per person for 2 travelers, falling to US$1,840 each when six share the vehicle, because the vehicle, guide and crater fee are split between everyone. Prices are per person, in US dollars.
| Travelers in the vehicle | Budget (camps and campsites) | Mid-range (tented camps and lodges) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | US$2,390 | US$3,155 |
| 3 | US$2,130 | US$2,765 |

| 5 | US$1,905 | US$2,590 |
| 6 | US$1,840 | US$2,605 |
On a shared safari you pay the price for the final size of the group, which we confirm with you before you pay the deposit. Camps at Ndutu charge peak rates while the herds are there, which is why the calving season costs a little more than other months.

Is a Shared Budget Safari Right for a Honeymoon?
It can be, if your budget is the priority: the calving season is one of the most dramatic times to be in the Serengeti, and you will share it with a small group of like-minded travelers. You have your own tent or room every night. If you would rather have the vehicle to yourselves, the same route as a private safari costs US$2,390 each for two at budget level, the first row of the table above, and we can upgrade a night or two to a mid-range camp.
Many couples finish on Zanzibar, which is hot and mostly dry in January and February; see our honeymoon safari ideas and Zanzibar holidays.
Tips for a Budget Calving Safari
- Book early: camps near Ndutu fill early in the calving season, especially in February
- Pack warm layers: nights on the crater rim are cold all year
- Bring a headlamp and earplugs for the campsites
- Be flexible by a day or two if you can; it helps us match you with a group
- Agree the tip as a group: about US$40–60 per vehicle per day for the guide, shared
