Who Is the Shared Luxury Calving Safari For?

It is for travelers who want the calving season from a luxury camp but would rather share the cost of the vehicle: solo travelers, couples and photographers who enjoy the company of others with the same interest. Calving is one of the easiest seasons to form a group, because so many travelers ask for the same weeks in February. Three nights at Ndutu give the group three dawns with the herds, when most calves are born and the predators hunt.

This safari suits you if… Consider another trip if…
You can travel between January and March You want your own vehicle and to stay with a sighting as long as you like: the 6-day private luxury calving safari

How We Form a Shared Luxury Calving Group

There is no fixed calendar: we start from the dates you ask for and match you only with travelers who want luxury camps in the same weeks.

Send us the weeks you can travel. We hold every luxury calving request we receive in one list for the season, and when four or more travelers want the same week, we put the group together and confirm it with each of you. Your deposit of 30% is only due once the group is set; if it doesn't fill, you choose between going privately and trying another week, and we tell you early enough to change plans.

For the busiest weeks in February, tell us your dates early: the Ndutu camps fill months ahead, and an early request gives us more travelers to match you with.

When Is the Calving Season at Ndutu?

Most calves are born within a few weeks, usually in February, but the timing follows the rain. What a group can expect each month:

Month On the Ndutu plains
January Big herds on the short grass; calving starts in earnest late in the month
February Usually the peak, with the most births and predator action
March Young calves and big herds before the plains dry out

See the Great Migration by month for the rest of the year.

  2. Day 2: Dawn with the calving herds

The group leaves at first light, when most calves are born, with a picnic so you can stay with the herds through the day. Your guide reads the plains for lions, cheetahs and hyenas following the herds.

  3. Day 3: Predators around Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek

Sharing a Vehicle on a Calving Safari

Calving sightings can last a long time, so groups that agree a few things on the first evening get the most from them:

  • Agree how long to stay at a sighting before moving on; a birth or a hunt can take an hour.
  • Photographers with long lenses can rotate to the roof hatch and the best side of the vehicle.
  • Start early: the first hours of the day are when most calves are born.
  • Pool the guide's tip as a vehicle (US$40–60 a day is usual) rather than tipping one by one.

Common Questions About the Shared Luxury Calving Safari

Short answers to the questions our guests ask us most often:

Are there fixed departure dates for the shared calving safari?

No. We match travelers who ask for luxury camps on the same or nearby dates between January and March; February groups form most easily.

How much does a solo traveler pay?

From US$4,420 with a room of their own, joining a group of four; there is no separate single supplement.

Will we see wildebeest calves being born?

In February it is likely, but not guaranteed: most births happen early in the morning, which is why the group spends three nights at Ndutu.

How is this different from your 5-day budget calving group safari?

The route is similar, but this trip uses luxury camps at Ndutu and a lodge on the crater rim, and the group is matched only with travelers who want the same level.

What if no group forms for my dates?

You can travel privately, for example on our 6-day private luxury calving safari, or move your dates to join a group.

Should You Book the 5-Day Shared Luxury Calving Safari?

Book it if you can travel between January and March, want a luxury camp close to the herds and are happy to share the vehicle: from US$4,110 per person in a group of four, or US$4,420 traveling solo with your own room. For your own vehicle and an extra night in Arusha on arrival, choose the 6-day private luxury calving safari.
