What You Need to Know: The best time for a Tanzania honeymoon is June to October, when it is dry on safari and sunny on Zanzibar, and the second best is late December to February, which adds the calving season in the southern Serengeti. April and May are the long rains on both the mainland and Zanzibar, with the lowest prices and some lodges closed. For the river crossings, travel from July to October; for the calving, from January to March.
Tanzania Honeymoon Weather and Wildlife, Month by Month
The mainland and Zanzibar mostly share the same seasons, which makes a safari-and-beach honeymoon easy to time. What each month brings:
| Month | On safari | On Zanzibar | Honeymoon we suggest |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | Green, warm; calving starts at Ndutu | Hot, mostly dry, calm sea | Migration honeymoon, calving |
| February | Peak calving at Ndutu | Hot, mostly dry | Migration honeymoon, calving |
| March | Calving ends; rains approach | Hot and humid, rains begin | 6-day safari or 10-day safari and Zanzibar |
| April | Long rains; some camps close | Long rains; some hotels close | Lowest prices, if you accept rain |
| May | Long rains, green landscapes | Long rains | Lowest prices, if you accept rain |
| June | Dry season begins; herds in the central and western Serengeti | Dry, sunny, cooler evenings | 10-day safari and Zanzibar |
| July | Dry; herds reach the north | Dry, peak season | Migration honeymoon, crossings |
| August | Dry; river crossings, usually busiest | Dry, peak season | Migration honeymoon, crossings |
| September | Dry; crossings continue | Dry, sunny | Migration honeymoon or fly-in honeymoon |
| October | Dry; fewer crossings, quieter parks | Dry, calm sea from October | Fly-in honeymoon or 10-day safari and Zanzibar |
| November | Short rains, mostly brief | Short showers | 7-day safari and Zanzibar, shoulder prices |
| December | Green; herds return south | Hot, mostly dry, busy at Christmas | 7-day or 10-day safari and Zanzibar |
More detail on each side is in the best time for a Tanzania safari and the best time to visit Zanzibar.
June to October: The Classic Honeymoon Season
This is the best time for a safari-and-beach honeymoon: the bush is thin and the animals gather at water, the roads are dry, and Zanzibar is sunny with cooler evenings. July and August are also the busiest and most expensive months on both, so book lodges and beach hotels nine to twelve months ahead. June and October give you the same weather with fewer people.
December to March: Calving and Hot Beach Days
The short rains are usually over by mid-December, and from January to March the southern plains around Ndutu fill with the migration herds as hundreds of thousands of calves are born, most of them in February. Zanzibar is hot and mostly dry with calm seas. Christmas and New Year are busy and expensive; late January and February are often the better honeymoon weeks. Our 12-day Great Migration honeymoon has a calving version for these months.
April and May: Low Prices in the Long Rains
The long rains fall on the mainland and on Zanzibar, often as heavy showers with sunny spells between. Some safari camps and beach hotels close for a few weeks, roads in the parks can be muddy, and prices are at their lowest. It can work for a budget honeymoon if you accept some rain; we check which lodges are open for your dates.
The Best Time for Each Kind of Honeymoon
If you already know what kind of honeymoon you want, these are the months to aim for:
| Honeymoon | Best months |
|---|---|
| Safari and Zanzibar | June to October; late December to February |
| Great Migration, calving | January to March, peak in February |
| Great Migration, river crossings | July to October, usually busiest in August and September |
| Zanzibar only | June to October and December to February |
| Nyerere and Mafia Island | June to October; whale sharks off Mafia from October to February |
| Kilimanjaro climb | January to mid-March and June to October |
Matching Your Honeymoon to Your Wedding Date
Most couples travel within a few weeks of the wedding, so the season often chooses itself. A summer wedding in June to August lines up with Tanzania's dry season and the river crossings; a winter wedding in December to February lines up with the calving and hot beach days; a spring wedding in April or May falls in the long rains, when some couples wait until June to travel. Tell us your wedding date and we suggest the best honeymoon for those weeks.
Ramadan and Holidays on Zanzibar
Zanzibar is mainly Muslim, and during Ramadan many restaurants in Stone Town close during the day and life slows until sunset, when the town comes alive for the evening meal. Beach hotels carry on as usual. Ramadan falls in February and early March in 2027, and from late January to late February in 2028, so it overlaps the calving season; it is still a good time to visit, with a little respect for local customs.
How Far Ahead Should You Book Your Honeymoon?
Nine to twelve months ahead for July to October and the Christmas holidays, when the best camps and beach hotels fill first; three to six months is usually enough for other months. A 30% deposit confirms your honeymoon and the balance is paid on arrival, by Pesapal (card or mobile money) or bank transfer in US dollars.
