4-Day Private Luxury Tanzania Safari: Tarangire, Serengeti and a Night on the Ngorongoro Crater Rim

Four days, three of northern Tanzania's great parks and three nights at luxury lodges, two of them inside the parks: a tented camp in Tarangire, a lodge in the central Serengeti and a room on the rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, with your own Land Cruiser and guide throughout.

What You Need to Know: The 4-day private luxury safari costs from US$3,455 per person for two travelers (US$3,100 each for four). You leave Arusha for Tarangire, cross the Ngorongoro highlands to the central Serengeti, sleep on the crater rim and drive down to the crater floor at first light on the last morning. Park fees, the crater service fee, three nights at luxury lodges with meals and a private Land Cruiser with your own Mweka-trained driver-guide are included. The same route at mid-range level costs from US$2,545.

Who Is the 4-Day Private Luxury Safari For?

It is for travelers who have four days and want the best of the north in comfort: elephants in Tarangire, the open plains of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater, without camping and without long transfers to lodges outside the parks. The Tarangire camp, the Serengeti lodge and the crater-rim lodge all sit inside the protected areas, so you wake up close to the wildlife and spend your time on game drives rather than on the road. Many guests add it to a Kilimanjaro climb, a business trip or a few days on Zanzibar.

4-Day Private Luxury Safari Itinerary, Day by Day

The route moves west every day, so you never backtrack, and the last night on the crater rim puts you first in line for the descent to the crater floor. Day by day:

  1. Day 1: Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Your guide collects you from your Arusha hotel after breakfast for the drive of about two hours to Tarangire. The afternoon is for a game drive along the Tarangire River, where elephants gather in large herds in the dry season among the baobab trees, before you settle into your tented camp inside the park.

Stay: Elephant Springs by Karibu Camps, Maramboi Tented Lodge or Lake Burunge Baobab Tented Lodge, or similar.

  2. Day 2: Tarangire to the central Serengeti

A morning game drive on the way out of Tarangire, then up into the green Ngorongoro highlands and down onto the Serengeti plains. You reach the central Serengeti in the afternoon with time for a game drive in the Seronera area, known for its lions and leopards.

Stay: Four Seasons Serengeti, Serengeti Serena Lodge or Nyota Luxury Tented Camp, or similar.

  3. Day 3: Serengeti morning, the crater rim in the afternoon

An early game drive when the cats are most active, then the drive back across the plains to the Ngorongoro Crater rim. The lodges sit high on the rim, and the view over the crater floor at sunset is one of the best in Africa.

Stay: Ngorongoro Serena Lodge or Lion's Paw, both on the crater rim, or similar.

  4. Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater floor, back to Arusha

Down to the crater floor early, ahead of most vehicles coming up from Karatu, for a game drive among lions, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos and, with luck, a black rhino. After a picnic lunch you climb out of the crater and drive back to Arusha in the afternoon, or to the airstrip for a flight to Zanzibar.

  • A second Serengeti night: more time on the plains and the best chance of leopards; see the 5-day luxury Big Five safari.
  • A night in Arusha before you start: at Arusha Coffee Lodge or Gran Meliá Arusha, or similar, with an airport pickup.
  • Zanzibar afterwards: fly from Arusha to Zanzibar for a few beach days at a luxury hotel.
  • The full northern circuit: the 7-day or 10-day private luxury safari.

Common Questions About the 4-Day Private Luxury Safari

Short answers to the questions our guests ask us most often:

How much is a 4-day luxury safari in Tanzania?

Our 4-day private luxury safari costs from US$3,455 per person for two travelers and US$3,100 each for four, including park fees, three nights at luxury lodges with meals and a private Land Cruiser with a driver-guide.

Is four days enough for the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater?

Yes, for a first taste: you get an afternoon and a morning in the central Serengeti and a morning on the crater floor. A fifth day in the Serengeti makes the trip less rushed.

Why sleep on the crater rim?

Rim lodges are only a short drive from the descent road, so you can be on the crater floor early, before most vehicles arrive, and you have the crater view at sunset.

Can we fly instead of driving back?

Yes. From the Ngorongoro area we can arrange a flight to Zanzibar, or you can fly from the Serengeti and skip the crater; ask us for the price.

Is the 4-day luxury safari private?

Yes. You have your own Land Cruiser and guide; no one else joins your vehicle.

Should You Book the 4-Day Private Luxury Tanzania Safari?

Book it if you have four days and want Tarangire, the Serengeti and the crater with every night inside the parks, from US$3,455 per person. If you can spare a fifth day, add it in the Serengeti: it is the single change that improves a short safari most.
