Who Is the Luxury Calving Safari For?

It is for travelers who want the Great Migration at its most intense for predators: newborn calves on the open plains, the herds around them and the lions, cheetahs and hyenas that follow. Three nights at Ndutu are the difference from a shorter calving trip: you are among the herds at first light on three mornings, when most of the action happens, and your guide has time to follow the predators. The crater-rim night at the end adds the Ngorongoro Crater without a long drive.

When Is the Calving Season at Ndutu?

The herds arrive on the southern plains with the short rains, usually in December, and most calves are born in a few weeks around February. What to expect month by month:

Month What to expect at Ndutu
December The herds arrive on the southern plains; the first calves
January Large herds on the short grass; calving starts in earnest late in the month
February Usually the peak of calving, with the most predator action
March Young calves and big herds; the herds begin to move as the plains dry out

Exact timing follows the rain; we check reports from guides at Ndutu before you travel. See the Great Migration by month.

Common Questions About the Luxury Calving Safari

Short answers to the questions our guests ask us most often:

When is the best time for the calving season in Tanzania?

From late January to March, with the peak usually in February, on the short-grass plains around Ndutu.

Will we see wildebeest being born?

In February it is likely, but not guaranteed: births are spread across the herds and most happen early in the morning, which is why we spend three full days at Ndutu.

How much is a 6-day luxury calving safari?

From US$5,040 per person for two travelers and US$4,625 each for four, including airport transfers, luxury lodges with meals, park fees and a private vehicle and guide.

Is Ndutu in the Serengeti?

Ndutu lies in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, on the southern edge of the Serengeti; the herds move freely across both, and so can we.

Is the calving season good for photography?

Yes. The light is soft in the green season, the plains are open and the predator action is close, which makes it one of the best times of year for wildlife photography.

Should You Book the 6-Day Luxury Ndutu Calving Safari?

Book it if you can travel between January and March and want the most time with the herds: three nights at a luxury camp at Ndutu and the crater to finish, from US$5,040 per person. For the crossings later in the year, see the 7-day luxury river-crossing safari.
