What You Need to Know: Our 6-day honeymoon climb follows the Marangu route, Kilimanjaro's only hut route, to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft / 5,895 m), from US$1,845 per person for a couple. You sleep five nights in the park huts at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo, in a private room we book for the two of you, with an acclimatization day at Horombo. The hut toilets are shared. Included for honeymooners: a Just Married banner, a celebration cake on the mountain, a crew song and celebration, climbing certificates and a champagne setup after the descent. Climb from late May to October or January to March.
Why Choose the Marangu Route for Your Honeymoon?
Because some couples want the summit, not the camping. On Marangu you sleep under a roof every night, on a mattress in a dry hut, and the trail is a steady path with no scrambling. The 6-day climb gives you a full extra day at Horombo to adjust to the altitude, which is why we offer it rather than the 5-day version on our honeymoon climbs. And it costs the least of the three.
What you give up is variety and some privacy. You go up and come down the same corridor on the south-east side, and the huts are shared buildings with shared toilets, busy in the dry season. Here is how it compares with our two camping honeymoon climbs:
| Our honeymoon climbs | 6-day Marangu (this climb) | 7-day Machame | 8-day Lemosho |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where you sleep | A private room in the park huts | A shared two-person tent | A shared two-person tent |
| Toilets | Shared, in the huts | Your own toilet tent | Your own toilet tent |
| Trail | Steady, no scrambling; up and down the same way | Varied, with the Barranco Wall | Varied, with the Barranco Wall |
| Nights on the mountain | 5 | 6 | 7 |
| From, per person (2 climbers) | US$1,845 | US$2,090 | US$2,335 |
Prefer a tent and your own toilet? See the 7-day honeymoon climb on Machame or the 8-day honeymoon climb on Lemosho. The plain trail details are on our 6-day Marangu route page; for timing, budgets and packing for two, read our Kilimanjaro honeymoon guide.
Your Private Room in the Marangu Huts
Most climbers on Marangu sleep in shared bunk rooms. For honeymoon couples we book a private room at each of the three huts, so the two of you have a door to close at the end of the day.
- Mandara Hut, 8,924 ft (2,720 m): your first night, at the edge of the forest
- Horombo Hut, 12,205 ft (3,720 m): two nights, in the moorland with views of Mawenzi and Kibo
- Kibo Hut, 15,430 ft (4,703 m): the summit base, a few hours' rest before the midnight start
The rooms have mattresses but no heating, so you each need a warm sleeping bag; rent one in Moshi for US$25 if you don't own one (rental prices). The toilets are shared with the other climbers at each hut. Your cook prepares all your meals, and your crew carries the food, water and safety kit, so you each walk with only a daypack.

The 6-Day Marangu Honeymoon Climb, Day by Day
Two days up to Horombo, a day there to adjust, the crossing to Kibo Hut, summit night and a long walk down. The hours below are planning times; on the day, the weather and your own pace set them.
-
Day 1: From Marangu Gate, 6,135 ft (1,870 m), Up Through the Forest to Mandara Hut
After the drive from Moshi, your guides register you at Marangu Gate and you set off on an easy forest path: 5 miles (8 km), 4–5 hours, among giant ferns, with birds and monkeys in the canopy.
Mandara Hut sits at 8,924 ft (2,720 m). Your private room is your first night together on the mountain.
Gentle forest startPrivate hut room -
Day 2: Out of the Trees to Horombo Hut, 12,205 ft (3,720 m)
The forest thins into heath and moorland, and on a clear day both summits, jagged Mawenzi and snowy Kibo, come into view. It is a long day, 7 miles (12 km) and 6–8 hours, with about 3,300 ft (1,000 m) of height gain.
Take it slowly and drink often; a little headache in the evening is normal, and your guides check you both before dinner.
Views of Mawenzi and KiboBig height gain -
Day 3: A Day at Horombo to Let Your Bodies Adjust
Instead of moving on, you walk higher for 4–6 hours with your guides and come back down to the same hut for a second night. Climbing high and sleeping lower is the best preparation for Kibo Hut.
Your guides choose the walk on the day, depending on the trail and how you both feel. The afternoon is free: rest, read, write in your honeymoon journal.
Acclimatization daySecond night at Horombo -
Day 4: Across the Saddle to Kibo Hut, 15,430 ft (4,703 m)
A 6-mile (10 km) walk of 5–7 hours over the high, open saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, a desert of gravel and rock that feels like another planet.
Kibo Hut is the summit base. You get the summit briefing and a health check, eat an early dinner and rest for a few hours before the midnight start.

Day 5: Summit Night: Gilman's Point and Uhuru Peak, 19,341 ft (5,895 m)
You set off around midnight and zigzag slowly up the loose scree to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then walk on along the rim to Uhuru Peak, 6–8 hours from Kibo. Unroll your Just Married banner at the summit sign.
After a rest at Kibo Hut you walk down to Horombo, another 5–7 hours: a long day of 11–15 hours, and a well-earned sleep.
Gilman's PointUhuru Peak together -
Day 6: Down to Marangu Gate, Certificates and Champagne
A 12-mile (20 km) descent of 5–7 hours through the moorland and forest you walked up. At Marangu Gate you sign out, receive your climbing certificates and thank your crew.
Then it is time to celebrate: we raise a glass of champagne with you at a simple, decorated outdoor setup, then drive you to your hotel.

What Couples Should Know Before Climbing Marangu
Your guides and crew
Each of you has your own guide, so a couple climbs with two guides, two cooks and ten porters. Our guides hold Tanzanian university certificates and Kilimanjaro National Park licenses, and have at least three years on the mountain. Every day they clip a pulse oximeter to a finger for each of you to read oxygen and heart rate and carry emergency oxygen, a first-aid kit and a stretcher. Should one of you need to descend, your own guide takes you down straight away.
Summit night is still hard
The hut route is the gentlest trail, not an easy climb. Summit night from Kibo Hut means about 3,900 ft (1,200 m) of loose scree in the dark and cold, and the last day is a 12-mile (20 km) descent. Train together for two or three months with long weekend hikes and stairs, wearing the boots you will climb in; our difficulty and training guide has a plan.
Food in the huts
Your cook makes breakfast, lunch and dinner, never repeats a meal during the climb and starts every lunch and dinner with a soup. Tell us about any diet when you book. Pack layers for the evenings: the huts are unheated, and Kibo Hut is cold.
How Much Is a Honeymoon Climb on the Marangu Route?
A couple pays from US$1,845 each, including a night in a mid-range Moshi hotel on either side of the climb. Your private hut room and the honeymoon touches are included at every level; only the hotel changes the price.
| Before and after the climb | Per person (2 climbers) |
|---|---|
| Mid-range hotel in Moshi, such as Tulivu Kilimanjaro Retreat, or similar | US$1,845 |
| Luxury hotel in Moshi, such as Kilimanjaro Wonders Hotel, or similar | US$1,990 |
| Luxury lodge in Arusha: Legendary Lodge, or similar | US$3,070 |
Prices are per person for a private climb for two on your dates, confirmed in a written quotation. About half goes on park fees, including the hut fee; our cost guide explains the rest.

When to Climb Marangu on Your Honeymoon
Late May to October, or January to March. The huts keep you dry when it rains, which makes Marangu the most forgiving route in bad weather, but the long rains of April and early May and the short rains of November still turn the forest trail slippery and hide the summit in cloud. July to September is the clearest and busiest time in the huts; January to March is warmer and quieter. Avoid the late-December holiday rush. More: the best time to climb Kilimanjaro.
After the Climb
A safari is the perfect way to rest your legs, and Zanzibar the perfect end. Our 19-day adventure honeymoon shows how a climb, a private safari and the beach fit together, and our honeymoon safaris page has shorter ideas.
How to Book
Send us your dates and wedding date through the form, on WhatsApp +255 678 992 599 or by email to jaynevytours@gmail.com; we reply from Moshi with a written quotation. A 30% deposit confirms your climb and private hut room, and the balance is paid on arrival. Cancel 60 days or more before arrival for a full refund; shorter notice is covered in our refund policy.
Honeymoon Climbs on the Marangu Route: Your Questions
Is the Marangu route good for a honeymoon?
Yes, for couples who would rather sleep in a bed than a tent. You stay in the park's huts, with a private room for the two of you, on the steadiest trail on the mountain, and the 6-day version adds an acclimatization day at Horombo.
Do honeymoon couples get a private room in the Marangu huts?
Yes. The huts are mostly shared bunk rooms, but for honeymoon couples we book a private room for the two of you at Mandara, Horombo and Kibo. The toilets in the huts are shared.
Is there a toilet tent on the Marangu route?
No. You sleep in the park huts, which have shared toilets, so the private toilet tent of our camping climbs isn't used on Marangu. If a private toilet matters to you, choose the Machame or Lemosho honeymoon climb.
Marangu, Machame or Lemosho for a honeymoon?
Marangu for a bed under a roof and the lowest price; Machame for the classic camping week and more scenery; Lemosho for the quietest start and the most time to acclimatize.
How much is a 6-day honeymoon climb on the Marangu route?
From US$1,845 per person for two, with a mid-range hotel in Moshi before and after. With a luxury lodge in Arusha it is US$3,070 per person.
Are the honeymoon extras included?
Yes. Your private hut room, the Just Married banner, a celebration cake on the mountain, the crew celebration, your climbing certificates and the champagne setup after the descent are all in the price.
What if only one of us is well enough to go to the summit?
Each of you has your own guide. The one who isn't well goes down with a guide, and the other can continue or go down too; you decide together, unless a guide says it isn't safe to go on.
When is the best time for a Marangu honeymoon climb?
Late May to October and January to March. The huts keep you dry in a shower, but the long rains in April and early May still make the forest trail slippery and the summit cloudy.
The Bottom Line
If you want Kilimanjaro on your honeymoon without the camping, climb the 6-day Marangu: a private hut room for the two of you, the steadiest trail, an acclimatization day at Horombo and champagne at the end. From US$1,845 per person for two. Choose Machame or Lemosho instead if you want more scenery and your own toilet tent.
