7-Day Honeymoon Kilimanjaro Climb via the Machame Route, 2027–2028

Kilimanjaro's classic seven-day climb, set up for newlyweds: a tent for the two of you, a guide for each of you, a cake baked at camp, your Just Married banner on the summit and champagne at the bottom. The right honeymoon climb when you have one week for the mountain.

What You Need to Know: Our 7-day honeymoon climb takes the Machame route from the rainforest to Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft / 5,895 m) and down the Mweka trail, from US$2,090 per person for a couple. It is private and runs on your dates. You share one two-person tent, each of you has your own guide, and your crew brings a mess tent and a private toilet tent. Included for honeymooners: a Just Married banner, a celebration cake at camp, a crew song and celebration, climbing certificates and a champagne setup after the descent. Climb from late May to October or January to March.

Is the Machame Route a Good Choice for Your Honeymoon?

For most couples with one week, yes. Machame packs the mountain's whole range of scenery into seven days, from rainforest and giant heather to the Shira Plateau, the alpine desert, the Barranco Wall and the glaciers of the summit, and its plan works with your body: you climb high to Lava Tower on Day 3 and sleep lower, and you spend an extra short day at Karanga before the summit.

The honest downside is company. Machame is the most popular camping route on Kilimanjaro, so you share the trail and the camps with other groups. On a private honeymoon climb that matters less than it sounds: you have your own tent, mess tent and toilet tent, and after dinner the evening is yours. If quiet matters more to you than a day, the 8-day Lemosho is the better fit; if you would rather sleep under a roof, see our 6-day honeymoon climb on the Marangu hut route.

Your 7-Day Honeymoon Climb on the Machame Route

The photos come from a recent honeymoon couple who climbed with us. They started on the Lemosho route, which meets the Machame trail at Shira, so from Day 2 you sleep at the same camps and see the same views. Walking times are what our guides plan with; your pace and the weather set the real ones.

  1. Day 1: Machame Gate, 6,004 ft (1,830 m), Through the Forest to Machame Camp

An hour's drive from Moshi brings you to Machame Gate, where your guides sign you in and the porters weigh their loads. The first stage is a 7-mile (11 km) climb up a forest ridge, 5–6 hours, with a packed lunch along the way; the trail is often muddy, so gaiters help.

Machame Camp sits at 10,007 ft (3,050 m), where the forest gives way to giant heather. Your shared tent is waiting.

  2. Day 2: Up the Rocky Ridge to Shira Camp, 12,631 ft (3,850 m)

A shorter day: 3 miles (5 km), 4–5 hours, up a steep and rocky path through the heath to the Shira Plateau. At camp you have Kibo's glaciers ahead and, when the sky is clear, Mount Meru floating above the clouds to the west.

Spend the afternoon resting together outside your tent; a short walk with your guide helps you adjust.

  3. Day 3: Lunch at Lava Tower, Then Down to Barranco Camp, about 13,000 ft (3,960 m)

The day that does most for your acclimatization: 6 miles (10 km), 6–8 hours, up through the alpine desert to Lava Tower at about 15,100 ft (4,600 m) for lunch, then down past giant groundsels to camp around 2,100 ft (640 m) lower.

A headache at the top is common and usually fades on the way down. Your guides ask each of you how you feel at dinner.

  4. Day 4: Hands On the Barranco Wall, Then an Easy Afternoon at Karanga, 13,238 ft (4,035 m)

You start by scrambling up the Barranco Wall, about 820 ft (250 m) of rock steps; it is a walk with a few hand-holds, not a technical climb. Then 3 miles (5 km) in all, 4–5 hours, over ridges and valleys to Karanga.

This short day is the extra night that separates the 7-day Machame from the 6-day version, and it makes summit night easier.

  5. Day 5: Up to Barafu Base Camp, 15,354 ft (4,680 m)

Only 2.5 miles (4 km), 3–4 hours, but the air is thin, so take it slowly. The afternoon is for the summit briefing, a health check for both of you, an early dinner and laying out every layer you own.

Hold your Just Married banner up at the Barafu sign: it is one of the best photo spots on the mountain, with the summit cone right above you.

  6. Day 6: The Summit Together: Uhuru Peak, 19,341 ft (5,895 m)

Wake-up is around 11 pm. You climb by headlamp up the long zigzags to Stella Point on the crater rim, often at sunrise, and walk on along the rim to Uhuru Peak for your summit photo together.

Then down: back to Barafu for a rest and food, and on to Mweka Camp at 10,138 ft (3,090 m). Allow 10–14 hours and 11 miles (17 km) for the whole day.

  7. Day 7: Through the Forest to Mweka Gate, and Champagne to Celebrate

A 6-mile (10 km) walk of 3–4 hours down a wet, slippery forest trail to Mweka Gate, 5,512 ft (1,680 m); trekking poles save your knees. You sign out, receive your climbing certificates and thank your crew.

After you come down, we toast your climb at a simple decorated outdoor setup with champagne, then drive you to a hot shower and a soft bed.

Climbing Machame as a Couple: Practical Answers

Privacy in a busy camp

Your crew pitches your shared sleeping tent, a mess tent where the two of you eat at a table, and a private toilet tent, so you never use the public long-drops. Evenings are yours: dinner for two, the health check, the next day's briefing and an early night.

A guide for each of you

Two climbers means two guides, two cooks and ten porters. Morning and evening your guides measure your blood-oxygen and pulse with a pulse oximeter and ask how each of you is feeling, because partners rarely adjust at the same speed. If one of you must go down, a guide goes with them at once and the other may continue or descend as well. Emergency oxygen, a stretcher and a first-aid kit travel with every climb.

Meals on the trail

Some days lunch is served hot at a table and chairs on the trail, as in the photo below, and on others it is packed; dinner is always in your mess tent, and your cook changes the menu every day and works around any diet you tell us about. Every lunch and dinner starts with a warm soup, and tea and coffee are always on hand.

Getting fit together

The Machame route asks for 4–8 hours of walking on most days and one very long summit day, but no climbing skills. Make training part of the wedding countdown: weekend hikes with loaded daypacks, stairs in the week, and a couple of long back-to-back hiking days a month before you fly. More in our Kilimanjaro difficulty and training guide.

Before the climb

We meet you at Kilimanjaro International Airport and take you to your hotel; that evening your guide checks your gear and anything you are renting. Rental prices cover the whole climb, for example US$25 for a sleeping bag; see our rental list and the packing checklist.

What Does a 7-Day Honeymoon Climb Cost?

Best Months for a Machame Honeymoon Climb

Climb from late May to October or from January to March. The dry season brings the clearest views and the busiest Machame trail, especially July to September; January to March is warmer and has fewer climbers. The southern routes are the wettest side of the mountain, so skip April, early May and November, and avoid the late-December holidays unless you don't mind crowds. Month-by-month advice: when to climb Kilimanjaro.

Add a Safari and a Beach

Our 19-day adventure honeymoon begins with exactly this Machame climb, then recovers on a private safari in Tarangire, the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti before four nights on Zanzibar. For other combinations, see our honeymoon safaris and Kilimanjaro, safari and Zanzibar trips.

Questions Couples Ask About a Machame Honeymoon Climb

Is the Machame route good for a honeymoon?

Yes, if you have a week. It is the classic seven-day climb, with the best variety of scenery and a sensible acclimatization plan; the trade-off is that it is the busiest camping route, so the camps are shared with other groups.

How busy is the Machame route?

It is Kilimanjaro's most popular camping route, so expect other groups on the trail and at every camp, especially from July to September. Your own tent, mess tent and toilet tent keep your evenings private.

Machame or Lemosho for a honeymoon?

Machame if you have seven days and like a lively trail; the 8-day Lemosho if you can add a day and want quieter first days and more time to acclimatize. The Lemosho climb costs US$245 more per person.

Do we sleep in the same tent?

Yes. Honeymoon couples share one two-person sleeping tent every night on the mountain.

What if one of us gets altitude sickness?

You have a guide each. If one of you needs to descend, a guide takes them down straight away, and the other can continue or go down too; your guides check both of you every day.

How much is a 7-day honeymoon climb on the Machame route?

From US$2,090 per person for two, with a mid-range hotel in Moshi before and after. With a luxury lodge it is US$3,310 per person.

Are the honeymoon extras included in the price?

Yes. The Just Married banner, the celebration cake, the crew celebration, your climbing certificates and the champagne setup after the descent are all included.

Can we combine the climb with a safari and Zanzibar?

Yes. Our 19-day adventure honeymoon starts with this same Machame climb, then a private safari and four nights on Zanzibar.

The Bottom Line

If you have one week for Kilimanjaro on your honeymoon, the 7-day Machame is the classic choice: the best variety of scenery, a sound acclimatization plan and a busy trail you share with other groups, with your own tent, guides and crew. From US$2,090 per person for two, with the banner, cake, crew celebration and champagne included. Want quieter trails and one more day? Take the 8-day Lemosho.
