Who Should Climb the 7-Day Rongai Route?

Choose the 7-day Rongai if you want a quiet trail and a steady gradient with no scramble, or if you are climbing in a shoulder month, when the north side's rain shadow gives you the best chance of dry days. The seventh day adds a night at Second Cave, which spreads the height gain before the high night at Mawenzi Tarn. The scenery in the first days is gentler than on Machame or Lemosho, but you see two faces of the mountain, going up the north and down the south-east.

When to Climb the Rongai Route

The dry seasons, from late May to October and January to March, are best on every route. Rongai is the route we suggest when you can only travel at the edges of the rains, because the northern slopes get less rain than the south. See the best time to climb Kilimanjaro month by month.

Your Crew on the Rongai Route

Each climber has a mountain guide, a cook and five porters, and our guides check your oxygen level and pulse every morning and evening; emergency oxygen, a first-aid kit and a stretcher go up on every climb. More is in guides, crew, food and a typical day.

It is gentler, with an even gradient and no Barranco Wall, but summit night from Kibo Hut is just as long and cold.

Rongai is an ascent route on the north side; the park routes descents down the south-east, so you see both sides of the mountain.

Yes, from US$1,845; it skips Second Cave. We recommend 7 days for better acclimatization.

Should You Book the 7-Day Rongai Climb?

Book it if you want a quiet, steady climb from the drier north side, especially at the edges of the dry season, from US$2,090 per person for two. In the main dry season, compare it with the 7-day Machame and 8-day Lemosho, or see all our Kilimanjaro climbs.
