What You Need to Know: We run two Great Migration safaris. From January to March, the 5-day calving safari goes by road to the southern plains around Ndutu, from US$2,950 per person for 2 (mid-range). From July to October, the 4-day river-crossing fly-in takes you to Kogatende in the northern Serengeti for the Mara River, from US$3,240, flights with Auric Air or Coastal Aviation included. Crossings and sightings are never guaranteed.
Which Migration Safari Fits Your Dates?
January to March: the 5-day calving season safari to Ndutu. July to October: the 4-day river-crossing fly-in to the northern Serengeti, or the 8-day migration photography safari by road, with three nights at the Mara River plus Tarangire and the central Serengeti. Other months: a central or western Serengeti safari planned around the herds.
The herds follow the rain and the grass, so timings shift from year to year. Tell us your dates, and our guides advise you on where the herds are likely to be.

The 5-Day Calving Season Safari (January to March)
Two nights at Ndutu among the calving herds and their predators, a night in the central Serengeti and a morning in the Ngorongoro Crater, by road from Arusha, from US$2,950 per person for 2 (mid-range). Ndutu sits on the border of the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, and in the calving season it has huge numbers of wildebeest and young, and the lions, cheetahs and hyenas that follow them.
The day-by-day plan, the camps at each level, prices for 1 to 6 travelers and the 2027 and 2028 season are on the 5-day Great Migration calving season safari page. January and February are the peak calving months.
The 4-Day River Crossing Fly-In (July to October)
Fly from Arusha to Kogatende and spend three nights near the Mara River, with two full days waiting for the crossings, from US$3,240 per person for 2 (mid-range), return flights included. The northern Serengeti is too far for a short road trip, so we fly; crossings happen when the herds decide and are never guaranteed.
The day-by-day plan, the camps at each level, prices for 1 to 6 travelers and the 2027 and 2028 season are on the 4-day Great Migration river crossing fly-in page. For more time, the 8-day migration photography safari goes by road, with three nights at the river plus Tarangire and the central Serengeti, from US$4,865.

How We Run Migration Safaris
Both safaris use a private Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof and your own driver-guide, trained at the College of African Wildlife Management, Mweka, with five years of safari guiding. Before you travel we check the latest reports from our guides and the camps, and book the camp in the area the herds are using. A sunrise balloon flight (US$490) can be added, and every safari has AMREF Flying Doctors evacuation cover.
Seasonal camps fill early: book three to six months ahead for February and August. See where the herds are in each month in our migration month-by-month guide.

Migration Safari Questions
Is the Great Migration guaranteed?
No. We plan around the usual pattern and current reports, but the herds move with the rain.
When is the best time to see river crossings?
Usually July to October in the northern Serengeti.
When is calving season?
Usually January to March, with the peak in January and February.
Can I see the migration in other months?
Yes. The herds are somewhere in the Serengeti all year; a longer safari, such as our 10-day safari, follows them in any month.
